What is Super Intelligence?
Super Intelligence (SI) is the term the U.S. executive branch was ordered to use instead of Artificial Intelligence (AI), starting with an executive order signed September 29, 2026.
It is a government naming change, not a new kind of machine. For purposes of that order, SI means the same technologies already covered by the federal definition of artificial intelligence in 15 U.S.C. § 9401(3), unless a later law says otherwise.
What did not change
Old laws, old regulations, and old contracts do not have to be rewritten. Industry can still say AI. Search engines still index both terms.
Not the research term
Researchers use “superintelligence” for a hypothetical system smarter than humans. The order is using SI as a brand for current systems.
Why people are searching it
President Trump previewed the rename at the U.N. General Assembly on September 22, 2026, saying “artificial” made the technology sound fake. On September 29 he signed the order after a White House meeting with technology executives. Federal sites, reports, and press releases are the places the wording is supposed to change first.
